We will borrow from Wikipedia for a definition of landscape architecture:
“Landscape architecture is the design of outdoor areas, landmarks, and structures to achieve environmental, social-behavioral, or aesthetic outcomes. It involves the systematic landscape design and general engineering of various structures for construction and human use, investigation of existing social, ecological, and soil conditions and processes in the landscape, and the design of other interventions that will produce desired outcomes.”
The key note which should be taken from that definition is this: rookies should not attempt landscape architecture. For proper landscape architecture, you need the services of a trained professional with vast experience in landscaping services.
Call us at All Seasons Outdoor Solutions and we can sit down with you to discuss your particular landscape architecture needs.
Let’s broaden the definition just a bit
The term “landscape architecture” usually refers to large jobs like a public park, or a broad landscaping scheme for a city or town, but the term can also apply to any home owner because, really, landscape architecture is nothing more than landscape design on a larger scale.
What is involved with landscape design?
Landscape design generally involves the following:
- Easy maintenance
- Attention to light
- The right style
- Visual lines
And within those elements, the following must be considered:
- Hardscape (structures, pathways, etc.)
- Soft scape (plants, trees)
- Drainage solutions
- Outdoor LED lighting (see pics)
Can this be done by a DIY homeowner?
Never say never! With enough research and study; with enough practice and mistakes; it is possible to do a reasonable job of landscape architecture or landscape design, but please note we said “reasonable” and not professional. True landscaping design experts are schooled and trained for many, many hours to do what they do.
Let’s put it this way: is the landscaping job important to you? If so, hire an expert in landscaping. Pay the money! It will be worth it.
Where would you find the work of a landscape architect?
Drive around any city of a decent size and you will see the work of a landscape architect. Their work will be found in city parks, at arboretums, in the general landscaping of the city roads, in the general design of the city grounds, at government facilities, at botanical gardens, industrial parks, commercial developments, and landscaping around highways, reservoirs, and dams.
In fact, in the very first few months of planning a city or a city expansion, a landscape architect is hired to help in that planning and/or expansion, aesthetics being quite important for any city or town.
